What do I need to start?

A tracksuit or pair of jogging bottoms and a t-shirt: something loose and comfortable. Later on – and if you have decided that it’s for you – you can get a gi (the white karate suit with a belt that is pronounced gee) via the club.

Do I need to be fit?

No. Your level of fitness will be taken into account and you will work from there. It’s up to you how much you put in and hence get out.

Will there be women in the class?

Yes! We have lots of women. In fact probably about a third of our members are women (and they’re not all young!).

Am I too old?

No. Students of all ages are welcome to train. Our oldest member started training with us when she was over 60.

Am I (or my child) too young?

Our kids section takes children as young as 5. The most important thing is that they can listen to instructions and want to do it.

Will I get hurt or injured?

Karate is a contact sport so there will inevitably be some injuries. Having said that we don’t do full contact sparring so this reduces the chance of you getting hurt. Over the years we’ve had very few injuries and these were related to pulled muscles and sprains. Our style is not a particularly “tough” one and we emphasise the softer side of it.

How long will it take me to get a black belt?

This depends on you and your commitment. It can be as little as 3 years but is typically more like 5.
